چکیده
THE difficulties of living in the Arctic in the winter are matters of general knowledge. It is perhaps not so well known that th~reare quite different and very acute problems during the summer season. The most serious from the medical aspect is attack by biting insects-mainly mosquitoes and blackflies. Th~ degree of this menace is difficult to imagine, unless one has experienced it personally. Mosquitoes have be;en termed the most serious single obsta'c1e in the way of man's subjugation of the north, :;md it has even been asserted that there are probably ten times as many mosquitoes in the Arctic as there 'are over any equivalent area in the tropics, or any other place on earth. Whether this is the case or not, they certainly present a serious problem, and one which is essentially similar in northern latitudes in the New and in the Old World:

Adsorption of 1,1-Dimethylhydrazine by Hydrolysis Lignin
Many modern launch vehicles use unsymmetrical dimethylhydrazine (UDMH) as liquid fuel in the space program. UDMH is highly toxic and poses a serious threat to the environment and to humans. One of the most effective methods of UDMH neutralization in case of fuel spills is adsorption. This paper is the first to suggest using hydrolysis lignin as rocket fuel adsorbent. The research was based ...
متن کاملDetection of Arctic and European cluster of canine distemper virus in north and center of Iran
Canine distemper virus (CDV) creates a very contagious viral multi-systemic canine distemper (CD) disease that affects most species of Carnivora order. The virus is genetically heterogeneous, particularly in section of the hemagglutinin (H) gene. Sequence analysis of the H gene can be useful to investigate distinction of various lineages related to geographical distribution and CDV molecular ep...
متن کاملProkaryotic Community Composition in Arctic Kongsfjorden and Sub-Arctic Northern Bering Sea Sediments As Revealed by 454 Pyrosequencing
Fjords and continental shelves represent distinct marine ecosystems in the pan-arctic region. Kongsfjorden is a glacial fjord that is located on the west coast of Svalbard, and is influenced by both Atlantic and Arctic water masses. The Bering Sea consists of a huge continental shelf in the northeast and a deep ocean basin in the southwest, and is influenced by Pacific water. Microbial communit...
متن کاملArctic Fox (Alopex lagopus) Diet in Karupelv Valley, East Greenland, during a Summer with Low Lemming Density
We investigated the diet of arctic foxes (Alopex lagopus) in the Karupelv valley, East Greenland, during the summer of 1997. Despite a low density, lemmings were the most utilized prey, comprising 65.3% of dry fecal weight in fresh feces. This demonstrates the importance of lemming species as prey for arctic foxes all through a lemming cycle. Birds, arctic hare (Lepus arcticus), and insects als...
متن کاملThe frequency and extent of sub-ice phytoplankton blooms in the Arctic Ocean
In July 2011, the observation of a massive phytoplankton bloom underneath a sea ice-covered region of the Chukchi Sea shifted the scientific consensus that regions of the Arctic Ocean covered by sea ice were inhospitable to photosynthetic life. Although the impact of widespread phytoplankton blooms under sea ice on Arctic Ocean ecology and carbon fixation is potentially marked, the prevalence o...
